CFYT Board of Directors– Up Close and Somewhat Personal
Vice President Jesse Cooke
Hi folks, it’s me Jesse Cooke. I’m part of the newest addition to the CFYT Board of Directors. I’m pleased to fill the role of Vice President and of course, still going strong with my previous role of volunteer programmer and avid CFYT listener. I’ve been with the radio station for the past year, and in the community on and off for the past four years. I see CFYT going in the direction of live televised coverage of local events as well as a stronger radio coverage of local news and issues, and as always, nothing but the best in musical programming. Come chat sometime, I’d love to hear your ideas.
Secretary Georgia Fraser
If I had to choose three words to describe myself to a Dawson newcomer, they would be “born and raised”. I grew up in the area and even though I occasionally step out for travel and general mischief, Dawson is my home and I don’t expect that to change. I have spent my last few summers cooking in the bush, but I have left that behind for good now and am rejoining society with renewed vigor. Cooking is absolutely my favorite thing to do, but I also waste time taking photos, blogging, and being a pet owner.
Although I am new to the world behind the scenes of radio, it has been behind the scenes of my life from the very beginning. I don’t remember very many mornings in my childhood that did not begin with the sound of CBC’s As It Happens. The unmistakable theme song and Michael Enright’s voice coming up through the floor were a good indication that the fire was probably made and it was safe to get out of bed. The radio was our only home link to the outside world, as it was in many homes in this area. Now that we have cable, satellite, and the interweb to link us to the “outside”, I believe CFYT is a valuable way for us to stay connected to our community. As a new board member of the DCCRS, I hope to help widen CFYT’s service to the community of Dawson.
President Jen Laliberte
I have been passionate about community radio for years; my radio career began with CFCR community radio in Saskatoon Saskatchewan but was re-kindled by CFYT here in beautiful Dawson City Yukon. I am interested in radio on many levels and I really appreciate the authenticity and spirit local radio can provide in a town or city and the technological marvels of radio communication and its ability to reach strange and distant regions wows me on the daily. Plus it was invented by an Italian-Canadian, and you know they always make good stuff. I am an avid music collector, listener, and well-wisher with diverse taste– you can check out my current program Surge of Scourge on Thursday nights from 10pm-midnight to have a tiny taste of my heavier favourites. I also manage CFYT’s web presence, so if you have questions or comments related specifically to this site, feel free to email cfytradio (at) gmail (dot) com and ask! In addition to radio, music, and internet nerdery I also get up to some screen printing (sometimes I design the CFYT tshirts), photography, writing, and working. I love being part of an active local organization and look foraward to more bold and exciting frontiers for CFYT radio.
Director Jorn Meier
Jorn Meier has been in Dawson for many moons and is still in love with it. His quiet life as resident nerd is constantly under threat by family, friends, volunteering, and reality in general. After a number of winters endured in West Dawson, he finally packed it in and decided to move south. So far he has made it to Henderson’s Corner.
He believes the Dawson City Radio Society is a wonderful tool to bring different people together, and invaluable as a community communication tool. As new board member his focus is to contribute to these aspects. He likes almost any kind of music, his favourites though are Blues, Rai, West African Music, Reggae and hopes to get a chance to play his music when he gets back on air.
Director Peter Menzies
I really believe in community based broadcasting. Local media helps a community understand all its different components. Sharing music and ideas keeps a community fresh for new ideas and honoring traditions. My specific interests are live broadcasts, volunteerism and a new facilities within three years.
